Pointers News · Coach Diaz named new Athletic Director

Pointer Family,

I am excited to write to you as the new Athletic Director of PLHS. My name is Coach Diaz, and it is my honor to succeed Coach V in this role. I want to praise Coach V and for the wonderful job she has done in raising the bar of athletic excellence and making the PLHS Athletic Department one of the strongest in the county. I look forward to continuing this work as part of the PLHS athletic community.

I have been an educator for 20 years, and I joined PLHS last year to teach AP and Honors Spanish. I served as Athletic Director for 4 years at Clairemont HS, and I have a MS in Coaching and Sports Administration. I am a product of San Diego Unified Schools, and the son of a teacher and coach (a former PLHS teacher/coach!). I have always believed in the importance of athletics and the pivotal role they play in helping develop our young teens.

It is my goal to continue the rich traditions of PLHS athletics, and to ensure that ALL student-athletes at PLHS have a positive experience while developing close comradery with teammates, competing in an environment that ensures fairness and equity, and learning sportsmanship and building character. A successful athletic program requires dedicated coaches, outstanding leadership from administration, active support from the student body, and a sense of pride fostered by the entire community.  It will be our mission at PLHS to bring all those facets together to create the best athletic program possible.

While it is not yet clear when HS athletics will begin again, or exactly what they will look like once they do, we are working hard to prepare for the time when sports will return. I will relay information as I receive it and clarify the impact these updates have on PLHS athletics.

As we navigate the path ahead, we must be ready to adapt to changes that lie in front of us. The Pointer community is all in this together, and we will overcome these challenges. I look forward to working with you all to continue the excellence and tradition of our Pointer Athletic Program.

Please check back for posts with updates regarding 2020-21 PLHS athletics very soon.
