Pointer’s Football entered the Division 2 CIF tournament seeded as 4th. This led them to have a BYE in the first round, saving them a seat at semi-finals. Point Loma was set to encounter Lincoln, seeded 5th, after the Hornets defeated Westview with a score of 54-14. Despite that on November 12th the Pointers had defeated Lincoln, 33-20, at their Homecoming game under the rain, the probability of winning during the semi-finals were pretty even for both teams. Point Loma and Lincoln are both filled with great talent and several players with athletic scholarships, which balanced out the odds.
It all came down on November 9th, when the Pointers and Hornets both set foot under the Friday night lights. In the first seconds of the first quarter, a 90 yard opening kickoff return, turned into a touchdown causing PL to be down 7-0. Eventually, Senior JL Skinner made a pass and Senior Wes Windmiller completed it adding seven points to the new scoreboard. Following two more touchdowns from Lincoln, the first quarter closed off with a score of 21-7. After many interceptions, time-outs, and thrown flags, the last touchdown went in favor to Lincoln with 2 minutes and 51 seconds remaining on the clock. This touchdown helped the Hornet’s achieve victory, 35-21.
When the clock hit zero, it officially concluded Point Loma’s football season for 2018. All the players started to hug each other showing great sportsmanship and love for the game. Several Pointers dropped down to the floor in tears after realizing that their passion and determination fell a little short. This was the last high school football match for 15 seniors which made it even more memorable for everyone. Overall, it was a splendid season and all the Football seniors will be missed. One a Pointer. Always a Pointer. EMAP!
